"The Daybreak Star Gallery is proud to present an exciting collaborative exhibition entitled Layers: New Works by Terrance Guardipee and Dan Joseph Friday. The exhibition will open on October 22nd and will be on display until December 11th. Layers will feature two internationally acclaimed artists– painter Terrence Guardipee (Blackfeet) and glassblower Dan Joseph Friday (Lummi/Swinomish). These two artists will show recent works , juxtaposing their different mediums of painting/collage and blown glass in one gallery space, focusing on the interaction of Native American history with contemporary artistic expression .
Terrence Guardipee is known for collaging stylized figures painted above antique maps, receipts, checks, and used ledger paper from the late 19th Century. He has won numerous awards, most recently First Place and Best of Division at the 2008 and 2009 Santa Fe Indian Art Markets. His work is in the permanent collections of The Smithsonian National Museum of THE? American Indian, The Margaret Casey Foundation Art Collection, The Heard Museum, and The Museum of Natural History in Hanover Germany.
Dan Joseph Friday’s glass work is representative of two worlds: his Puget Sound upbringing and his formal training in traditional Italian glass blowing methods. Dan was raised in the locally and comes from a family of fisherman. He has worked with artists at the top of the glass world including Dale Chihuly, Paul Marino, and Pino Signoreto, and he has taught at the Pilchuck Glass School. He describes his work as “a local Native street kid’s interpretation of glass creation,” and he is interested in how viewers can see the reflection of his urban Native heritage in his work.
The exhibition is free at Daybreak Star. The exhibition opening on the evening of October 22nd will feature live music, complimentary nutritious snacks and a question and answer session with the artists.
This exhibition is funded by the Mayor’s Office of Arts and Cultural Affairs."
