Thomas S. Buechner, NYT obituary

[excerpted] "Doubtful about his ability to make a career as an artist, Mr. Buechner accepted a job as assistant manager of the display department at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. When the Corning Glass Works created the Corning Museum of Glass in south central New York State, he was named its first director and served in the position from 1951 to 1960.


Mr. Buechner established the museum as a scholarly institution whose exhibitions on ancient and contemporary glass traveled to museums around the country. He founded two professional journals, The Journal of Glass Studies and New Glass Review.

After resigning from the Brooklyn Museum in 1971, he returned to Corning Glass, where he became president of its Steuben Glass division in 1973, a position he held until 1982. He also served again as director of the Corning Museum of Glass from 1973 to 1980.
After retiring from Corning in 1987, he returned to painting full time, executing portraits, landscapes and still lifes. His portrait of Alice Tully, a granddaughter of the founder of Corning Glass, hangs in Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center."

Objects considered excellent from any of several viewpoints—such as function, subject matter, aesthetics, and technique—will be chosen. The objects selected will be published in color with the names of the makers and brief descriptions of the pieces."

"All glassmakers, artists, designers, and companies are invited to participate in New Glass Review 31. Only glass designed and made between October 1, 2008, and October 1, 2009, may be submitted for this annual survey.

Each year, The Corning Museum of Glass conducts a worldwide competition to select 100 images of new works in glass. A committee drawn from designers, artists, curators, and critics makes the selection. The publication is intended to keep its audience, which includes museums, artists, libraries, collectors, scholars, and dealers, informed of recent developments in the field. Objects considered excellent from any of several viewpoints—such as function, subject matter, aesthetics, and technique—will be chosen. The objects selected will be published in color with the names of the makers and brief descriptions of the pieces.

Participants are requested to complete the attached form, submitting a total of three digital images illustrating one work per image. Slides and transparencies will not be accepted. Three images of different pieces are preferred, although participants may send multiple views of one or two pieces. Digital photographs, which should be made using the highest-resolution setting on the camera, must be of actual objects designed and made between October 1, 2008, and October 1, 2009.

Please submit digital photographs on CD-ROM, labeled with the artist’s name and the title of the work. The photograph file should be labeled as follows: artist’s last name_first name_ title.jpg or artist’s last name_first name_title.tif. Do not use quotation marks, apostrophes, parentheses, or any characters that are not numbers or letters. E-mail submissions will not be accepted. Backgrounds will be cropped at the discretion of the editor unless otherwise indicated by the artist. The quality of the Review depends upon the quality of the images submitted; each digital photograph should be suitable for reproduction. All images become the property of The Corning Museum of Glass and are added to the Rakow Library’s extensive audiovisual archive. This collection is used by scholars, dealers, collectors, and artists, and is therefore of considerable potential value to you. We encourage all artists and companies to enter.
