From the Selkirk Advertiser, Scotland:
"Two contemporary glassworks produced by a Selkirk studio could fetch £6,000 at a top London auctioneers. Annica Sandstrom and David Kaplan, who own Lindean Mill Glass, will see their work line up alongside 13 top-selling artists for Bonhams inaugural modern and contemporary glass sale on May 19. The auction is expected to attract bids from around the world and both of their lots – named Spine and Between the Lines – are estimated to make between £2,000 and £3,000 each. Although the estimate maybe out of the price range of the majority of visitors to Lindean Mill, Annica says both items represent a fair price for the sculptors’ efforts.
“It takes us weeks to make a piece and there are many steps involved,” she added. “The time and effort we take is reflected in the price.
“Myself and David work as a team on each piece. He blows the glass in workshop which is then shaped in a kiln and cut into shape by me.
“You never know with auctions, especially in these uncertain times, but we would hope the bidding reaches the estimate price.”
Annica and David secured a spot in the auction, the first of its kind in the United Kingdom, after being contacted by renowned art agent Dan Klein. Alongside the work of Lindean Mill will be that of Stanislav Libensky from the Czech Republic, who achieved celebrity status when a glass sculpture of his sold for a world-record auction price of $400,000 in New York. Libensky has another glass sculpture in Bonhams’ London sale, which is estimated to sell for a more modest £15,000, while well-known American artist Dale Chihuly’s ‘Soft Cylinder’ piece is expected to go for £9,000.
Annica said: “Dale has a chandelier in the entrance of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, which just has to be seen. To people involved with glass he is a big name.
“It is great to be featured in this catalogue of new works alongside such artists as Dale and Stanislav.
“Sales of this type are common in America, but this will be the first modern and contemporary auction in the UK so it will be interesting to see how our piece gets on.
“We have been making glass for more than 30 years and had our work included exhibitions for years, but this is a first.”
Mark Oliver, head of decorative arts at Bonhams, added: “The sale is an exciting first in Britain and a marvellous opportunity for collectors of post-war glass to secure some key pieces.
“Our working relationship with Dan Klein Associates has meant that the profile of the sale is likely to attract many keen bidders from across the world.”
Lindean Mill Glass is no stranger to acclaim, with Annica and David’s work having been featured in the Scottish and Aberdeen Art galleries."
